The Best Dog Walks Near Doublebois

With spectacular scenery and a varied geography, walking in Cornwall is world-class no Cornish holiday would complete without a good walk. And if you’ve brought your four-legged friend along for the adventure, you’re definitely in the right place.

At Doublebois Lodge Escape, we’re surrounded by some of the county’s prettiest countryside, with historic woodland, rugged moorland and the stunning south coast all within easy reach.

In other words, holidaying with us offers plenty of opportunities for muddy paws, wagging tails and a very tired (but happy) dog snoozing back at your lodge afterwards. With so much choice on offer it can be hard to know where to start so to help you out, here are some of our favourite dog walks near Doublebois Lodge Escape.

Golitha Falls

If your dog loves woodland walks, streams and having a good sniff around, Golitha Falls Nature Reserve is a must and it’s just moments from Doublebois.

Set within beautiful ancient woodland, there is a fairytale feel to Golitha. The River Fowey tumbles through moss-covered trees in a series of hypnotising cascades and mini-waterfalls. There are narrow gorges and shallow pools to explore where Fool’s Gold glitters in the sand and birds flutter in and out to drink.

There are several routes you can walk including a gentle out-and-back path to the falls viewing area, as well as rougher and steeper paths if you fancy exploring a little further.

It’s especially scenic during autumn when the trees are full of colour, although we think it’s pretty magical at any time of year.

Our tip: It can get muddy and slippery after rain, so bring sensible shoes and keep an eye on adventurous dogs around fast-flowing water.

Minions and the Cheesewring

No, not the yellow comical characters who wreak havoc wherever they go!

High up on Bodmin Moor, just a short drive from Doublebois, lies the old mining village of Minions which is the starting point for one of the most atmospheric walks in this part of Cornwall.

From the car park you can head out across the open moorland towards the famous Cheesewring stone stack. Along the way you’ll pass ancient stone circles, Bronze age burial sites and historic mining remains, taking insome seriously impressive views along the way.

It feels wild, open and wonderfully Cornish.

Dogs will love the space here but please be mindful that sheep and ponies graze on the moor, so keep your dog under close control and follow seasonal lead requirements. These are usually signposted around the car park for your information.

Our tip: The weather can change quickly on Bodmin Moor. Pack an extra layer, even if the sun is shining when you leave Doublebois!

Lanhydrock

For a slightly statelier dog walk, head to the National Trust run Lanhydrock House and Gardens which is also a short drive from Doublebois, along the A38 near Bodmin.

Rich in history, the wider estate has hundreds of acres of historic countryside to explore, with woodland, parkland and riverside trails all ripe for exploring.

All of Lanhydrock’s designated walking trails are dog-friendly, making it easy to choose a route to suit your energy levels. Whilst well-worth a visit, please be advised that the house itself is not dog-friendly so you’ll need to allocate someone to remain with your four-legged friend if you’d like to take a peek inside!

With plenty to see all year round, Lanhydrock is a brilliant option for a relaxed morning or afternoon wander, with the National Trust café on hand to refresh and revive you after.

As with any walk, dogs must be kept on leads around livestock and there are a few areas where dogs aren't permitted, so please check the signs as you explore.

Our tip: The Respryn Woods area is particularly lovely for a peaceful walk near the River Fowey and there is a little coffee van close by serving up delicious hot drinks and home made snacks.

Cardinham Woods

Beautiful Cardinham Woods is one of Cornwall’s hidden gems and a firm favourite with dog walkers come rain or shine.

This densely tree valley has a gently flowing stream running through it with miles of woodland tracks and several waymarked trails to choose from. For an easy stroll, try the Lady Vale Walk, which meanders along the stream through the woods with a few doggy dipping spots along the way.

If you’ve got a dog with energy to burn, choose one of the longer, more strenous trails and explore deeper into the forest. Each trail is clearly sign-posted, starting and ending at the car park – which you will need to pay for.  However, as there’s drinking water for dogs and even a self-service dog wash near the toilet block, it’s worth every penny, particularly for hosing down muddy pooches before heading back to your lodge!

And if you’ve worked up an appetite we highly recommend the Woods Café, tucked away close to the car park and serving up an array of award-winning home made food.

Our tip: Keep dogs close by and in sight, as the woods are surrounded by farmland and livestock.

Talland Bay and the South West Coast Path

If it’s fresh sea air you’re after then head to Talland Bay, between Looe and Polperro, for a proper Cornish coastal walk.

The South West Coast Path needs no introduction and the area around Talland is breathtaking with beautiful sea views, hidden coves and plenty of ups and downs to tire out even the most enthusiastic walker. Try the Hendersick and Talland Bay loop for for views across towards Looe Island and the South East Cornish coast.

Or simply park near Talland Bay to enjoy a shorter wander along the coast path before heading back for some beach time.

Our tip: The coastal paths can be very steep and livestock may be nearby, so keeping dogs under control is always a good idea.

Muddy Paws Welcome at Doublebois

After a day exploring Cornwall, there’s nothing better than heading back to your lodge, where you can put your feet up whilst your dog sleeps off the day's adventures. It’s even more enjoyable if you have chosen a hot tub, allowing the warm water to soothe aching limbs…

Whichever you choose, you can be sure of a selection of pet-friendly options because we love dogs at Doublebois Lodge Escape and we are sure they will love it here too.  We allow up to two dogs to stay free of charge and our enclosed decking means they can get some fresh air while you relax too.

Pack the lead. Bring the treats. Cornish walkies are waiting!
