Just ten minutes down the road from Doublebois Lodge Escape lies beautiful Cardinham Woods, home to miles of scenic woodland trails, cycling routes and peaceful picnic spots.
For families who enjoy the great outdoors, it is simply ideal. Those with younger children in tow can gently meander along the river in a little loop, keeping eyes out for Gruffalo characters along the way. Older children can set off on one of the more adventurous trails, passing historic engine houses and sites of interest along the way.
All routes start and finish at a large carpark (pay on arrival), where you’ll also find a play park and the Woods Café – which serves up a heavenly selection of freshly made food. The perfect way to reward yourselves after a few hours spent clocking up your step count whilst reconnecting with nature.
Step Back in Time at Lanhydrock House
Lanhydrock House and Gardens is one of Cornwall's most impressive National Trust properties and makes for a truly fantastic family day out. Plus, it’s only a short drive along the road from Doublebois Lodge Escape.
Explore the grand Victorian house and discover what life was like for both the wealthy family and the servants who lived and worked there.
Outside, families can wander through miles of gardens, woodland and parkland which is filled with wildlife. There’s also a delicious café, play park, bike trails and plenty of space for children to run, play and explore.
Experience Cornish History at Bodmin Jail
For families with older children looking for something a little different, Bodmin Jail offers a fascinating glimpse into Cornwall's past.
This recently restored attraction is packed with interactive exhibits and immersive experiences where visitors can learn about the jail's history, infamous prisoners and dramatic stories from centuries gone by. Said to be home to several ghosts, there’s a spooky Halloween trail offered each year which is really good fun for family holiday with teens.
Combining history, storytelling and technology, this award-winning attraction has created an engaging visitor experience, bringing Cornwall's heritage to life in a really special way.
One of the most popular family days out in Cornwall is cycling along the Camel Trail. This largely traffic-free route follows a former railway line through some of Cornwall's most beautiful countryside, stretching from Padstow on the north coast, to Bodmin, in the heart of Cornwall.
Easily broken up into segments, the mainly flat trail is suitable for all ages and abilities, offering a relaxed cycling experience, surrounded by stunning countryside.
The Bodmin to Wadebridge stretch passes alongside the Bodmin and Wenford steam railway as well as the Camel Valley vineyard, with a couple of smaller cafes providing refreshment as you go.
The Wadebridge to Padstow section is the more popular one and can become incredibly busy, particularly during the main school holidays.
Our advice would be to set off from Wadebridge in the morning, following the beautiful Camel Estuary to Padstow. Lock your bikes up and spend a few hours taking in this pretty fishing village, perhaps treating yourselves to fish and chips on the quay side before cycling back.
Bike hire is available nearby, making it easy to enjoy a day of family adventure without needing to bring your own equipment.
